For what it's worth the top section will be normally pretty hot after
running on plan a while. It's pretty far out of the water and the gear oil
does not circulate. How do you know it has a faint scraping noise if it's
still on the boat?
Never heard of "the typical hole" that bleeds air into the water?

Got a mercruiser alpha gen II outdrive that the bearing going into the

Also, the cost to weld the typical hole that bleeds air in to the water
intake on Mercruiser outdrives above 35 MPH causing overheat and a new
skeg (previous owner ground it off )
