In article ,

I have a new Yamaha 200 (ox66) outboard with just 22 hours on it. The other
day I took it out and noticed a slight metallic rattling noise while it was
idling, seemed to go away after a few minutes, then while running about
3600rpm's I heard a loud thud coming from the engine, no change in
performance just a loud thud... I stopped and checked everything over and
then continued, every so often we would hear this same noise..can't find
anything obviously wrong..just looking for some ideas before I take it back
to the dealer. Thanks... Tom

Engines rules of thumb

Rule or thumb 1 - Little rattles are probably not a good thing but may
or may not be terminal, Loud thumps are defiantly not a good thing and
often are harbingers of very bad news.

Rule of thumb 2 - Continuing to run and engine that makes loud thumps is
not a great idea, It never makes things better. It always makes things
worse.

Rule of thumb 3 - There are exceptions to rules of thumbs 1 & 2 but
waiting to see if you are one of the exceptions can be very expensive.

Run, don't walk, back to your dealer.
