For what it's worth ... whacking the starter on my jeep would get it to
start indicating a starter problem (solenoid, wiring etc was ok). I replaced
the starter with a rebuilt from the dealer (all that's available for a '96
XJ). Less than a year later, that starter failed. I replaced that one (it
was replaced under warranty) with a "better one" (the original replacement
had been superceded). Where I'm going with this is ... when you replace that
starter, I suggest get one from a reputable source so as to reduce the risk
of going through the same exercise again.

Wellcraft, 28 with twin inboard, 230 Mercruisers. The port engine will
not start unless one pounds on the starter with the ignition on. I have
been told that this is due to a stuck solenoid or that I need a new or
rebuilt starter.. Is this accurate information?
thanks, Bill
