We're running a Nissan 4-stroke 5hp on a FoldaBote for a dingy on
Lionheart. It also forbids you from just laying the motor on the dock the
way you could the old 2-stroker, which didn't care.

Couple that with all the oil changing maintenance of it, and I wish it was
a 2-stroker. (Where do you put waste oil from the 4-stroker in a strange
place away from home?) What nonsense for a little dingy motor. Mix the
oil and gas and the two stroker is ready to ride. What hours is it going
to have on it in 10 years? 10? 20? Dingys make little short runs only
when you're anchored out or want to go to the beach. I doubt any cruiser
ever wore out a two stroke engine, just because it was a 2-stroke engine.

Greenies aside, 4-stroke engines are a pain in the ass when you have to
change the oil and be careful what "side" you sit them on when you pull
them off the little boat. What happens when you tilt them up and they lay
over on the wrong side? The oil runs out and makes the greenies' point of
4-stroke conversion moot....

Get the two stroke and change the spark plug every few years. Oh, and
while you're looking, try to find one with a DIAPHRAM carb! Float carbs
also stink in a tiny portable engine. The gas in the float bowl either has
to be run dry before storage or it will evaporate in storage and turn to
shellac plugging up all the jets and a real pain to clean out. Diaphram
carbs don't store gas in an open pot and you can empty what gas is left in
them in a few seconds by just shutting off their gas supply. I don't know
if you can still even buy one with a diaphram carb, now. But it's worth a
look....

Wanna make the 2-stroke last longer? Mix the TC-W3 oil at 25-30 to 1
instead of the 50:1 or 100:1 "they" tell you to. After all, "they" are
trying to sell more engines! Yep, it smokes a little. 2-stroke engines
properly lubricated DO smoke. They're burning lube oil, you know! No
smoke, no lubrication. When I sold my 1997 Sea Ray Sea Rayder jetboat with
the 2-stroke 175hp V-6 in it, the 25:1 lubrication kept the rings and
cylinder walls looking like new, even though it had nearly 1000 hours on
the hourmeter! The guy who bought it from me is still premixing oil at
25:1 and it runs great! I removed its crappy plastic oil injection after
getting the 2nd recall notice from Mercury. Premixing a 2-stroke gas with
oil makes SURE the expensive engine gets proper lubrication....
