Tall Ship aground at Channel Islands Harbor
Had to come "home" for a few days to take care of some family stuff and
dropped by the ole Rudder Room (on the beach at the entrance to the
harbor) for one of their patented "two is almost too many" drinks.
Imagine my surprise and consternation to see a couple of tall masts
swaying back and forth on the wrong side of the jetty!!
As the true horror of the situation sunk in, I couldn't help but wonder
a) How in the heck did the captain allow his vessel to be so close to
the beach and b) Why in the heck were all the coast guard, tow company,
and numerous other vessels on the scene not doing anything to save this
magnificent ship?
She turned out to be the Irving Johnson, a replica of a nineteenth
century barkentine that is only 3 years old! She took some 8+ million
to build, along with a sistership, and was being used as a training and
education vessel. There were 10 students aboard and supposedly 10
instructors. It was fortunate nobody got hurt.
