The house is about 100 feet from the wires. The readings in the yard were
taken between the house and the wires, and got progressively weaker as I
moved away from the wires. The house was (essentially) empty and no or very
little current was flowing in the house's circuits. I'm thinking the
readings inside the house were caused by the outdoor power lines.
When I walked under the wires my meter pegged (OL).
I agree that there may be little or no danger to me physically, but as
you've suggested, it could be problematic if I wanted to sell the house
later. I liked the place but figured it's just not worth it. Of course, it
also failed the radon and septic tests, and had coliform in the well water.

One thing, your reading in the yard were larger than those in the house.
Yet
the literature (and others) always say the fields should be higher in the
house. Did you test with any appliances on? It is a good thing you
measured
the fields and don't always believe people when the say the fields in the
house are higher. The 20 mgauss field in the house could have came from
the
powerlines, not the wiring of the house.

Gilligan,
by the way, I took your advice and walked away from the house I was
considering. When I did the formal inspection I brought along my
gaussmeter.
The readings in the house were 15-20 milli-gauss and in the yard the
readings exceeded 100 milli-gauss. I know the jury is still out on this
issue, but I'd rather err on the side of caution.
Thanks,
Scout

If it's a sock you must mean millipede not hydra.

You are too kind Katy,
However, you know me well enough to know that I am not one to condemn
another without credible evidence and first hand knowledge. Even now,
as
I
feel that disgusting gurgle found only in a throat crushed beneath
one's
heel, I feel a certain pathos too. I don't condemn the entire Hydra,
only
this one particularly nasty head (or shall I say, sock?).

Scout, Scout, Scout,
I'm so sorry that you've taken this so hard...if you had only asked,
several of us here could have told you Neal was a liar ling before
this
and saved you from all this angst...

Now you claim to have no affiliation with the US Postal Service? So
you
are a liar!
You've claimed teachers do not pay into the social security system
and
you were WRONG.
You've claimed tenure means one cannot be fired and you were WRONG.
You've claimed that "for every fifteen feet below the surface you
get
one
more atmosphere of pressure" and you were WRONG.
You've claimed to understand the feelings of Mark Twain regarding
living
on the water and you were WRONG.
You claim to know all about women and you are consistently WRONG.
You claim to be a sailor; you are a pedantic sailor, nothing more.
A
sailor inherently understands tact, you are clueless here.
And if all that isn't enough, you're ugly too! You look like the
old
guy
in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!
Clean up your act Captain Curmudgeon!
Unlike you I don't make claims to be intelligent and I don't call
others
stupid. I, however, am not stupid enough to believe that Bush is
good
for
this country. And you think you're smarter than Jon?

As stupid as Gaynz is, he has come closest to guessing my

prior
to my retirement. It wasn't a postman to be sure. You are stupider
than
Gaynz and that's hard to do . . .

Interesting Max.
I wonder how it could be that a man as smart as Neal seems to be,
does
not know that as a U.S. Postal worker, he is entitled to the
often
misunderstood privileges of tenure. In fact, he has criticized me
for
enjoying the same benefits that he has! It leads one to consider
the
possibility that he is not a U.S.Postal worker at all!
