Oz,
I don't know of any place that rents these, and a quick search didn't
produce anything viable. I've never heard of any of the major rental
companies renting one of these. They are pretty good in ice/snow, but I'd
recommend something a bit more roomy anyway, and most of the rental
companies do have SUVs. (I don't recommend using chains unless you have no
other choice. The rental companies don't want you to use them, I doubt
they supply them, and putting them on is not a lot of fun if the weather
turns nasty. There are crews that do it for you, but they charge $30.
Enterprise is pretty good generally. You'll pay a bit more for a Hertz or
Avis car. I'll see if I can find something about Subarus tomorrow.
One thing to keep in mind is which highway you decide to take and when
you're planning on doing the driving. Highway 50 closes periodically (80
is almost always open), and chains, 4x4 or not, they won't let you
through. You should definitely check the weather and traffic. I'd also
suggest not trying to get there on a Friday or leaving on a Sunday unless
you leave really early.
You'd need to give the rental agencies--the local offices--a call, Jon.
When we last rented from Enterprise, we were surprised to arrive at the
office and discover Audis, Mercedes, and other upscale cars for rent. None
of them appear in their ads on the Web. Each office apparently has a number
of non-standard cars.
