Yep, it's easy to become immersed in the city.
We stay at a place called the Hotel de Tourisme (sp) right near the
Eiffel Tower / Champs de Mars

You were right near the Palais de Chaillot, then. You should have gone
into the maritime museum there. Amazing collection of sailing &
seafaring stuff.
