A log is a chunk of wood. Throw it overboard and time it's progress
between two marks on deck a known distance apart. Calculate water
speed. Set conversion constant variable value in software or analog
computer (variable resistor) so indicator agrees.

Make adjustments for high and low speed variations in accuracy.
