I wouldn't purchase a boat on ebay through an auction.
However I might call after the auction is over as many items don't sell.
At that point I'd buy it contingent upon a mechanic's examination.
From there I'm in the dark too.
I don't know how I would trust a mechanic's recommendation on boat 5 states
away.

Thanks for the help.
I take it the varying ratio oil system didn't work too well?
My brother in law unhooked his but I didnt' ask why.

All such systems have a failure rate. Your BIL is just one of the
paranoid OMC owners. Don't bring it up with him, though. Stay on his
good side so you get to spend time on his boat!

A greater concern is that is the period in which OMC outsourced many of
its components, like pistons etc. There were reported quality problems.
However if the motor is running well after 6 years it should be ok. Do
you get to run it and have it inspected before putting up the money? I
don't quite get the ebay purchase for stuff like that. How does it
work?
