Where's the guy with the little electric snowblower?

We were supposed to get 4-8" of snow, but the storm passed north of
us, and we got 2-3" max, though there are snow showers forecast for
today. It's -11C right now, though, and the winds are howling. I
haven't been outside yet today. Looks pretty miserable.

We're not totally immune down here in Florida either. It's a chilly
58F right now. ;-)

Seas are 2 feet right now, but building to 10 feet this evening with
NW winds 20-25 knots. The temp is supposed to drop 25 degrees over
the next 12-18 hours. The Tampa area (160 miles north of me) is
issuing Gale warnings, with seas 9-13 feet, and temps 27-32F.

Sounds like a good day for the semi-annueal SW Florida Dental Assn
Fishing Tournament.

I went out today anyhow. Fished the back waters, and it wasn't too
bad if I fished the leeward side of the mangroves. My 5 year old and
I caught countless mangrove snappers and sheepshead on live and cut
shrimp. All were teeny tiny, but it sure beats the snow.

Here's a weird tip. When I lived in NE Florida and fished a lot with
live shrimp, I tossed the ones that didn't survive in the livewell in a
glass jar filled with diet pepsi and stuck it overnight in the fridge.
For reasons totally unknown to me, the next day, those pepsi-soaked
shrimp were gangbusters as dead bait the next day. Coke did not work.

How the heck did you ever think of even trying that?

One weekend in Florida, while my rig was in the shop (stator), I went to
the Jax Beach fishing pier. The guy next to me was catching one nice
whiting after another, using shrimp and I was catching almost nothing. I
asked him what he was doing, and he showed me...he had been soaking his
shrimp in diet pepsi. He gave me a couple and they worked. And worked
almost every time afterwards I tried the technique. I don't know what it
is, the aroma, the taste, the artificial sweetener soak.

Do they stay firm and tough enough to stay on the hook? Day old dead
shrimp usually turn to mush.

Ahhh...as a dentist, I thought you would know the secret to keeping dead
shrimp on the hook...braces elastics!

The only thing that I use dead shrimp for is tipping my sabiki rig. If I
know that I'm using shrimp tipped jigs, I still buy fresh shrimp, and cut
them up. I don't have much luck with shrimp that I have been dead for more
than an hour or so. Of course, I never tried the Diet Pepsi trick.
