Actually Cappy, where the yacht is, the wind was probably less than
30.
Can you explain that?
Do you now start to understand just how little you know?

I know enough to understand a balanced sail plan. The only
time a storm trysail is needed is for survival conditions.
When you're racing in a little fifty-five knot blow you
should be racing - not putzing around with a reefed mainsail
acting afraid. Those guys were clearly hove-to and hove-to
sideways to the wind. The configuration of their hull and
keel did not allow the vessel's head to face the wind.

They put themselves into a dangerous position laying sideways
to the wind and waves. They were asking for a knock-down.

Real sailors would have bent on a balanced sail plan and
run downwind enough to have some way on and some
control. The picture shows an inept crew.

I know you don't like to hear this because you seem to have
some personal identification with the losers but get over it
and face the facts.

I could have and would have done better than they did.
