Default 72 Evinrude 25HP Troubles

Just got this motor from a friend and went over the whole motor myself. New
points, condensers, plugs, wires, coils, new fuel lines and fittings
including primer bulb and fuel pump, cleaned carb and installed an
automotive type inline filter between motor fitting and inlet of fuel pump.
Motor runs great once you warm up and get on it. Been having problems with
motor losing power at full throttle. Found I had bad priomer bulb this
morning and was pushing gas back into the tank. Replaced it and went out
again today. Well this time it ran OK until I stopped it and fished awhile.
Then motor was hard to start and was missing out again at extended full
throttle running in the bayou. Bypassed motor fitting and fuel filter I
added and connected gas line directly to the fuel pump. This time it ran
great. Ran it hard and for extended time to make sure I fixed it. It was
running good until I was idling back to the launch. Then it was shaking and
sounding rough. Came back home and pulled plugs. They are fouled now. Gooey
oil all over them. Just for fun, I pulled the thermostat cover off and guess
what? No thermostat. Had a spare one around that hasn't been used. It is a
140F thermostat. Put it in tonight, but haven't cranked it. Could this be
the source of all my troubles? Should I reconnect my inline filter? What
effects will overcooling an engine do. Could I have caused any major engine
damage by running it like that? Gonna try it tommorow and see what happens
on some new plugs.
