possibly a dumb question
Did you try bleeding the engine?

Finally did bleed the system and took off the return line. Blew
through the return line to clear any blockage. She then started and
ran fine. I dunno. It just took me a day to remember how simple the
diesel fuel system is and how to do it. Maybe I got an air bubble in
the fuel line somehow. I am sure it will recurr.

Sorry to hear about your son. Sounds like a balky engine is the least of
your worries.

If the problem does reoccur (and I hope it won't), try opening your fuel
fill cap. If you can hear any suction sounds, that's an indication of a
vent blockage. (This needs to be done right after the engine quits.) If
not, you'll know to look elsewhere.

Best of luck.
