"Bennies" were the transvestite hookers that would prey on the newbie
sailors as a cheap "date". And, no, I didn't participate. They looked
good from a distance though. They must have come (pun intended) later
than your tour.
There were a lot of the campfire girls across the road from the Humpty
wall.
BTW, Humpty was a dumpy old woman when I saw her. I never saw her
talking with a "customer".
Naples was a good port for a frigate. We tied up to the outer seawall,
had a "hamburger" from a hot dog style cart and cheap cabs were waiting
for the long trek around the seawall to the port center.
I always had a good time in Naples. Took a 3 day tour to Rome for 40
bucks, including bus ride, hotel and 2 (huge) meals/day. Visited Pompei
and took the Hydrofoil to Capri.
Spent plenty on beer in the "gut".
Oh yea, I was working on the radar one day in port and an Italian tug
was attempting to take the anchor off of an Italian frigate for
maintenance when it let loose and hit the tug from about 10 feet up and
sank the tug. I only saw the aftermath.
Brings lots of other similar memories as I'm sure you have.
