HAYWARD, Wis. (AP) - A dispute among hunters over a tree stand in
northwestern Wisconsin erupted into a shooting that left five people
dead and three injured Sunday, a television station reported.
The alleged gunman, a man from the Twin Cities area, was arrested Sunday
afternoon, Sawyer County Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle told KSTP-TV of St.
Paul, Minn.
The shootings happened near Birchwood about noon. The station quoted
authorities as saying the shooting began after a hunting party saw a
hunter they didn't know occupying their tree stand.
That led to a confrontation. One victim used a walkie-talkie to call for
help, but when other hunting partners came to the scene they also were
shot, the station reported.
A similar thing happened on Florida's East coast when a guy in a 36'
sportfish started fishing the same weedline as 3 guys in a 23' center
console. Both sides exchanged words, and the guy in the 36' boat opened
fire, fortunately not seriously injuring anyone. He was of course arrested
upn his return to the dock.
It comes down to common courtesy. As big as the Gulf is, I have to wonder
why someone has to fish in *my* chum slick 15' behind my boat. I was
sitting on a nearshore wreck 2 miles off Gordon Pass fishing for bait, when
a 40' charter pull up not 10' off my port side. I guess I was sitting on
*his* bait spot. I yelled out that we were casting 4 oz. jigs in that
direction and if he'd like to avoid one going through the windows in his
salon, it'd be a good idea to move back a little ways. I also reminded him
that he was responsible for the safety of the people on his charter, and
that he was placing them in a potentially unsafe situation where there could
be 4 oz jigs and 8/0 hooks flying by their heads.
The same thing happens in Chesapeake Bay. Maybe the charter captains
have 'their' spot marked on their GPS, and since it's on their GPS the
spot belongs to them.

Perhaps if you left the environs of Herring Bay more often, you might
find some good spots of your own. The other side, around due east from
the Nuke Plant, is uncrowded, with interesting bottoms, and lots of
interesting, tasty fish, including flounder. Find the 20' depth line and
fish just inside it, north and south. Live bait is best.
Been there, done that. The charters from Solomons go there regularly,
as you'd know if you'd ever been to the rips.
I've never seen charters in Herring Bay, unless they're returning from
the Gooses (or headed that way).
Sounds like you're copying and pasting from Tidalfish, Harry. I sure
don't recall your post with all the pictures of your flounder.
