Ya know Harry, I served from '54 to '77, all on sea duty and I never saw one
of those mugs. All of the ships I served on were WWII vintage as well..

I think the mugs you discribe were pre-WWII since the ones we always had in
the general mess were white glass with a pair of green strips around the
top.. The same in the CPO mess but the Ward Room had china cup and saucers.

The heavy crockery came back in the '90s, with heavy off white plates and
bowls and cups with handles. I managed to get a set of 4 oval steak plates
and a dozen bowls. Great stuff if you want to preheat in the oven.
