NY Times:
get clear message
NEW YORK, NY, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Former President Bill Clinton urges Democrats
not to "whine" over the election, to be encouraged and to find a clear
national message.
Clinton gave his analysis of Election Day in a speech Friday at a meeting of
the Urban Land Institute in New York City.
He said Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry had been hurt by the
issue of gay marriage that was on the ballot in 11 states and the surfacing
of a videotape from Osama bin Laden in the final days of the campaign that
influenced voters not to "change horses" during heightened concern over
national security, the New York Post reported Saturday.
Clinton said that while Democrats registered more new voters, Republicans
did a better job of getting voters to the polls who were already registered,
but had not previously voted.
"The Republicans had a clear message, a good messenger, great organization
and great strategy," he said. "This election presents a great opportunity
for President Bush and a great opportunity for Democrats, and the two are
not necessarily in conflict."
