I am replacing my old 1972 Model 2 Mercruiser outdrive with a new
alpha drive in conjunction with a repower.
The old drive is huge and it looks like the existing transom hole
will be too large.
Question?
Does Merc have a plate to cover the hole or will it have to be re
glassed from the inside. If reglassed am I looking at a lot of $$$$.
Is it a big job?
I don't believe there is an adaptor plate specifically for this
purpose. I do know that there are adaptor plates for Volvos to
different types of outdrives, but I don't believe any of them are
Mercury. Maybe somebody who knows Mercury outdrives can answer that.
Having said that, to cut out a little transom and epoxy/glass in new
wood for the new drive is not a major deal - it will add to the cost
of the job, but certainly not more than $1,000 - it's pretty simple.
Get an estimate - it might surprise you how little it will cost.
Good luck.
