Unless your company went bankrupt, use your cobra.

Pay the 300 a month and the friend with the sick child must pay the
insurance if he is to be solvent in a year. If you can get family

insurance
for 300 month then you are doing very well for insurance cost unless you

are
in your 20's.

he cant get insurance...he's not eligible for CHIPS since he has a
home. and he and i both paid more in taxes than ford and GM did last
year.

If he got laid off with you he is eligible for COBRA coverage for 18 months.
Will cost what his company paid for insurance + a max of 10%. This is not
need based, this is a government requirement if a company with more than
about 50 employees laysoff people. Unless his employer went bankrupt and
out of business, he can get the coverage.
