I have two related problems: (1) what kind of trailer would be

rated for 3500lbs with a trailer fitted with surge brakes. Is it even
feasible to trailer an S2 22 with this minivan, albeit for short
distances? The boat is 2300lbs, probably closer to 2500 with outboard,
sails etc.

As long as you keep your total weight under 3,500 and do nothing but
short local hauls (moderate speed, no hills), you should be OK. An
aluminum trailer will help to keep the weight down. Be sure to turn
off overdrive on the van's transmission, consider adding a
transmission cooler, and think seriouly about disk brakes for the
trailer. Your biggest issue will probably be to find a suitably steep
ramp (deep water) for launching the keel off the trailer. Do you have
access to a hoist? That would make it easier. Your other issue will
be pulling the boat up the steep ramp once you find it. 4 wheel drive
is your friend in that situation.
