Buying a boat in Canada -> U.S.
In article ,
says...
Please excuse my ignorance on such matters. What, if any, are the
considerations for a US citizen buying a boat in Canada and bringing it back
? For example taxes, fee's, customs clearing, etc. Many times I see boats
(Canadian) listed in both US and Canadian dollars. What other dollars,
besides exchange rate, would have to be considered.

Chuck explained all the highlights.
I did this four years ago without a hitch. My vessel had been built in
the states and imported into Canada.
I don't remember specifically where in the sale agreement it took place,
but I had to declare my intention to take the boat out of the country in
order to avoid sales tax. If you take the boat out within a certain
period of time, you don't have to go through being taxed and then having
to get a refund.
The one thing I would recommend in addition is that there is a clear
title and no liens, just as you would a sale in the states. Given
you're across the border, it's even more important to make sure it's got
a clear title.
You will, of course, be responsible for any sales tax due in the state
you or the boat resides.
All in all, it was a pretty painless process.
Good luck.
