Best place to find appropriate foam for cushions is in a large city
where you will find 'for the trade' foam supply sources.

Foams vary greatly in density and quality, typically with polyurethane
"high density" foams being best for cushions that also double for sea
berths. Obviously, the higher density foams will cost more.

A specialty foam (for the trade) source will also have large cutting
tables (with band saw) for precise cutting (extra charge). Cutting
foam by hand is not easy, although if you have a very sharp electric
carving knife and can hold it to a straight edge .... you might get a
straight cut line.

Other: to increase the service life and 'support ability'..... how far
your ass penetrates into the foam ... consider to glue a scrim
polyethylene felt onto the upper surface of the foam using contact
cement .... will allow the foam better support and distribute 'seating'
loads; otherwise the bones in your ass will sink through the foam and
touch the support surface under the foam.

The foam that you typically find in 'local fabric stores' is usually
very low density and usually quickly degrades (ages).

There are some websites for foam .... do websearch for: upholstery +
foam.
