In total, Kerry served on active duty for three and a half years, from
August 1966 until March 1970. He was transferred to the Naval Reserve
in 1970, and was later transferred to the Standby Reserve in 1972,
where he no longer was required to participate in Reserve activities.
He received his honorable discharge in 1978.
