I have a manual on order, but I don't expect the manual is going to provide
instruction for how to set the gears and shim spacings.

Anyone else?

Thanks,

Greg

A good manual will answer all your questions and save you a lot of
headaches.

Hi all,

I have a 9.9 Gamefisher outboard. It's in pretty good shape other than a
broken drive shaft so I'd like to repair it. I've dis-assembled the

lower
end to find a shim broken up in pieces. Seems this may have caused the

gears
to lock and break the shaft. I'm not certain, though. The strage thing

is
the shaft had score marks from rubbing against the base plate of the
impeller housing. Maybe it was bent or otherwise damaged.

Anyway, this shim has been cleaned out of the gear case. But I need to

know
a couple things:
1) How do you properly shim the lower unit gears? What special tools are
required?
2) There are some bits of shim that welded themselves to the end of the

prop
shaft spline. I'm planning to use a lathe to clean this area, but then

will
need to make up for the space with shim adjustments. Is this correct or

is
a
new prop shaft a must have? There is no significant damage to the prop
shaft.

Thanks for any help.
