Check out the Wayfarer..small, open boat, but has crossed seas. Big
following in the UK I understand.

I usually sail a Wayfarer at my club when I cant be bothered to take my
Albacore. Its possible to capsize a wayfarer but it needs a combination
of bad luck, inattention and poor seamanship to actually do so in any
conditions you'd want to take the family out in. They are big enough to
sleep two adults if dinghy camping with bottom boards to keep you and
your kit out of any bilge water, plenty of stowage, easily driven by a 2
to 3 HP outboard and the mast lowers easily on a pivot pin so the
bridges on the Broads would not be a problem. They've also got decent
but not outstanding sailing performance :-)
