to replace the blocks at the top of the mast?? Being an older boat it
may not be a bad idea to lower the mast and check it out but if it can
be avoided it would be good.

I am of the understanding that there are different types of block
(with grooves etc and made of different materials) that are used
depending of whether you are running wire or rope. Would it really
matter if I use a spectra halyard if the block was originally meant to
run wire?? or would it jam or wear too much?

I have faced this already, and the main halyard and two of the forward
halyards are now hi-tech fiber of one sort or another. I found two
kinds of rope-wire sheaves. One has a sort of round-bottommed V shape,
and I kept those. The other has a groove in the bottom to fit the
wire. I replaced those.

The first one I replaced was the main halyard. I used Spect-set X. My
first mistake was choosing line with the same working load as the wire
it replaced. THis was too thin to handle conveniently and too
stretchy.

I replaced it with line big enough to handle and it works fine.
