I use the West method. In brief here is the system:
Wet interior edge of thru deck with epoxy.
Tape underside of deck
Spray chain plate with non stick stuff
Fill deck hole with thickened epoxy
Under deck carefully slit tape with razor
Now the hard part
While one person SLOWELY forces the plate through the deck, the other person
catches the epoxy being forced out.
When the plate is all the way through the deck, clean it with solvent and
bolt it in place.

The final seal is watertight and because there is no wiggle room left, the
plate can't work loose to allow water in.

I've used Boat Life and Boat caulk for the last few years to seal my
chain-plates. They need to be rebedded almost annually to avoid the drips.

Has anyone used something that is more durable? I have a collection of
chemicals in the boat shed including 3M 4200 and Dolphinite which I have
not
tried. They seem like they might be TOO permanent.

What has worked for you?
