Mike, For whatever reason, its like the stat is molded into the housing.
It would not drive out in either direction. I finally drove the center of
stat out with a chisel and hammer. The flange is still in place in the
housing. Two other guys helped me and none of us could see any other way.

As far as the gas in oil, I am taking the suggestion of Greg and have
ordered a new float.
