Default Conserving food without a fridge

In "Once is Enough", Miles Smeeton,
mentioned 'flash boiling' eggs for 5 or
ten seconds, to extend their life. I also
think of the staples of pioneers, like salted
meats and beef jerky. For carbos there
are crackers.
A little research into food preservation
before refrigeration would be full of info
and what's better than the web to do research?
