Square riggers ability
no, frankie, *you* could not. a sailor could.
Do you think it could go up-wind?
...snip...
Well, in a previous posting, your favorite local pseudo-scientist and
mine, the inimitable Jax, stated that you can go upwind because of the
vector version of Zeno's Paradox. I quote:
__________
*If*, markie, you're still worried about the "lift" a sail produces,
do
consider that if you replace the dacron cloth with a sheet of plywood,
you
could still sail upwind.
And if you cut the size of the plywood in half, you could still sail
upwind
(well, I could). Cut it in half again, and still you could sail
upwind.
simply put, markie, ALL you need is a force vector off the bow by some
angle
and you have a resultant forward vector.
__________
So, you could buy that boat, add some plywood micro-sails and you're
good to go. Maybe Jax could recommend a good phlogiston-fuelled stove
for meal preparation. Refrigeration by Maxwell's daemon, of course.
Hell! Maybe, I should go bid on that hull! Could be an interesting
project.
