Sounds like it's well protected then -is that something to do with the
Gulf stream? Are there a lot of shipwrecks?

Depends on your boat, your nerves, and the weather. Supposedly there are a
couple of channels used by locals coming in from the west, but AFAIK the
approach usually relied on is to sail well north (or south, if you have
either come from the Bahamas or have been blown past it) and around to the
east side.
