Hey, I served on the Gompers in 80-82. It was my neutral duty in lieu of shore
duty. Made 2 extended West Pac's (some shore duty). Where's she home ported
now?
What divison? I was aboard 79-81 in 3rd division - Boats & Cranes.
I was in R-6. Were you aboard when we were leaving San Diego and in the channel
and there was a fire room casualty (blown fuel oil pressure switch bellows as I
recall) so had to secure the boiler and lost propulsion, the anchor was late in
getting dropped so we ended in the middle of the channel, one diesel generator
had flat air banks, the other's output breaker blew after 20 minutes, and the
battery powered VHF radios had dead batteries. What a mess that was. I had to
rig a portable generator that we used to power air samplers on the signal bridge
and ran an extension cord down to the bridge to power the radios. We could hear
the old man scream up there.

That must of been after the ship returned from west pack in 81. My 4
years was up in oct 81 we were still in deigo garcia and I flew back
to process out. I was one of the two helsman on sea and anchor detail
so I would of been on the helm or in the anchor room and do not recall
that.
Im glad you were in R division. While working in the oilfield in
Mexico I had the bad luck to work with one of the worst capts ever.
His name was James (JIM) Johnson and he was at least a 5th a day man.
One day he was so wasted he let our boat drift into a platform and
tore the bridge wing off the boat.

She is now homeported in Davy Jones Locker.
The USS Cole sent her to the bottom testing some harpoon missles.
You can read all about it at

Nothing like manning the rails and getting that kind of greeting at the docks.
You have to be very careful not to knock someone out with a Monkeys Fist.
We always took at least one greeter out everytime :0)
