Default Coast Gurad Regulations- Fuel Filter / Water Separator

Just a hunch - if its an inboard gasoline engine it needs a metal bowl. If it
diesel, or outboard, a see-thru bowl can be used. Check out the Racor site for
info on that.

The regs, in their gruesome entirety (almost) are the Code of Federal
Regulations, or CFR. Most of the appropriate to boats are in 46CFR or 33CFR.
Its online at:
http://www.gpoaccess.gov/cfr/index.html
but its not for the feint-hearted.

A better description is the ABYC code, which is, in fact, largely "included by
reference" in the CFR. However, I think you have to pay for a copy.

You might find much of what you're looking for at:

or other pages on

I saw a new 40' sailboat yesterday had a metal bowl under the primary Fuel
Filter / Water Separator. The sales rep said that it was a CG Reg. My
current sailboat (built in '94) does not have such a thing. The surveyor
never mentioned it either. Anyone have a link to the Regs that would cover
these things? I'd like to know if there are any other items that would
cause a 'Coastie' to peel off a citation.
