Peggy Hall, who is one of the industry experts in marine sanitation recommends
the external type as she says the internal ones all eventually succumb to the
corrosive and clogging effects of what is it a holding tank. I purchased an
Acugage for my boat, but as it is still undergoing restoration I cannot speak
from direct experience. However, eight years in an engine room in the navy
taught me just how often mechanical level detectors in a corrosive environment
will fail.
Peggy has a book out that tells you more than you ever wanted to know about
marine sanitation.

Mine's internal. Don't know if it is sea land or not, but it works great with
a little red light in the head. Wouldn't want to come to rely on one and then
find it not working - could cause pressure in bad places.
