Default possibly a new boat

I'm looking at a mid-1960s Jensen Cal 28. Seems to be in great
shape. Inboard diesel (one cylinder seems to be quiet and doesn't
smoke with minimal vibration - for a one-banger), two jibs, main
in good shape, standard electronics (nothing fancy), interior is
newly painted, hull appears clean, standing rigging looks fine. Comes
with a spinaker and pole, anchor (not chrome unfortunately), has a
2-burner propane stove, teak inside seems to be in decent shape,
mostly. It's a flat top (no raised cabin).

Didn't know they made a flat-top 28. I'm familiar with the flat-top 25.

Two deficits that I can see... it has an illegal head, so that has to get
changed... it has a self-tacking jib mechanism. Looks ugly, can't
imagine why I would want it set up like that.

Is it one of those old 1960's self-tackers? I agree, you don't want that.

I can get it for $6K and they'll split the haulout and survey with me.
They were asking $9K.

I'm going to do a sea trial hopefully soon.

Have you written up a list of everything you'd want to upgrade and how much
it would cost? New blocks, new running rigging, new batteries (what sort of
charger does it have?), new sails? Unless the standing rigging has been
renewed in the past ten years, I'd count on doing that too.

$9K this boat is insane in the current market... $6K doesn't sound like such
a bargain, given what you say about the boat.
