Well, when they have to speak of "that place", they use one name or
the other and more often than not the name they choose is based on
their background and political opinions. Which is petty.

For me, its based upon what its original name was and would still be
if an invading army hadn't arrived, killed lots of the locals, set
itself up as an army of occupation and renamed a place, despite the
wishes of the locals, with a royal stamp of approval.
