What made McCain a hero?

After nearly a year of imprisonment in Hanoi, McCain was offered
release. But he refused to leave his fellow prisoners behind.
McCain's subsequent torture and false confession, which provoked him
to attempt suicide twice, earned him special respect in the eyes of
many Americans.

Agreed.

Local Bay Area guy was a fellow prisoner. Says McCain not sharpest knife
in the drawer. What was accomplished by not leaving fellow prisoners
behind? Guy in Stockton, California was a Hanoi Hilton resident. Later
was a contracted instructor for the military in handling being a POW. He
was shot down by a guy with an AK47 and a magic bullet entering he jet
intake. He says after a couple weeks, tell them anything they want to
know, as nothing is secret by then that you are aware of.
