The rationale was that reducing the rate of spread would "flatten the
curve" and prevent health care facilities from being overwhelmed by a
sudden influx of patients. That seems to have been at least partially
successful in the NY metro area. The rate of new infections there
remains high but for the most part have been manageable by hospitals.
That may not hold true if the infection rate starts rising in more
rural areas that have fewer resources.
