My recollections are that motorcycles have kill switches and small
boats have deadman switches on the shifter/throttle.

On every boat I have had since the Carter administration the kill
switch was a lanyard operated switch that shorted out the ignition.


Of course, but if the lanyard is missing it could be a "pull knob" as he
described.
