I just asked him to use something that wouldn't rust, and no cheap aluminum. He chuckled. Said he
used only the best stainless.

You should have went with titanium or monel (the stuff they use for
dog tags) ;-)
He may have been kidding about the stainless. I'll ask him for certain next time I see him. Next
week.
316 or a similar cousin would work. The stuff you see rusting on boats
is usually 304/18-8.
It s stronger but not as stainless.

Stainless also has a problem with something called crevice corrosion
if oxygen can not freely circulate, not sure if that appllies within
bone. It's definitely an issue on boats however.
