I was privileged to see Chuck Berry perform in 1963 at The Stables, a
huge barn in Lawrence, Kansas, that had been converted to a rock'n'roll
dance and beer joint. He was terrific with his local pick-up band, all
of whom were familiar with his music. The Stables, which I'll bet is
long gone, was famous for several years running of being the venue that
served more Coors Beer than any other beer bar. I didn't like Coors.
Kansas was where I "discovered" Mexican beers, which I did like. I think
the second most popular beer out there back then was a brew from Texas,
maybe Lone Star? The most popular radio station back then at night was
XERF, a Mexican station that featured WolfMan Jack. You could only get
the station at night. There was another station out of Chicago that was
popular, but I don't recall its call letters.
