I have. It was a way to placate the South's slaveowners.
That is revisionist bull****
Sorry, but I'm not willing to accept the opinions and ruminations of a
totally uncredentialed, self-described "historian" who thinks slavery
should have continued beyond the Civil War.
Are you just acting stupid or do you have reading comprehension
problems?
My contention is that slavery would have fallen from it's own weight
if the north and the europeans you hold in such high regard had simply
refused to buy slave produced goods. It was a financially driven
institution and if the finances stopped making sense, the institution
would have failed. After the war the actual conditions for the freed
slaves did not change much. Certainly they had the option to quit
their job after 1865 but they did not have much opportunity to do
anything else. Most stayed on as share croppers or slave wage
employees.
Living conditions, job safety and actual take home wages were not any
better in the coal mines or sweat shops that were staffed by "free
men" up north and that continued well into the 20th century (some say
even now).
