That is the thought about fish on a stringer but a lot of time they
die and the deterioration starts immediately. Most state and federal
laws require that you are not filleting them on the water tho because
it is harder to enforce size limits. Throwing the whole fish into the
cooler or dropping them in a live well is the way to go if you think
the cops will see you.


Chain and hook stringers will keep fish alive a long time if you're not
moving too fast. I've fished for 5-6 hours and they were still kicking
when I filleted them. I haven't used a string "stringer" in many years.
Fish won't last on them.
