The advisory council allocated $80,000 for the APBA Offshore World power boat
races, which received $85,000 last year. The November event was praised for its
ability to bring people to the Keys and "put heads in beds."
This year's event will add a mostly European class of 100 10- to 12-foot boats
that go about 85 mph and will run during half-time of the Friday and Saturday
races, organizer Lee Mills told the council. The participation of the small
boats will bring an international flair and add about 800 more participants to
the event, he said.
