Maybe you should have just said something like, "Oh, I'm sorry. I thought the baby seal killing
atrocity had stopped many years ago. Apparently I was wrong as the Canadians are still torturing
baby seals with their killing methods. I suppose there are some folks up here performing much worse
hunting practices than the Americans I usually harp about."

A statement like that would have been perfectly acceptable.
