He's going into Biomedical Engineering, so he's checked out, according to his dad, what he 'needs'. This year, in high school, he's taking third semester calculus along with 'Physics with Calculus'. Yeah, he's smart and busts his ass. He's having a rough time though. There are only 30 kids in the whole program, in Richmond, and almost all the rest are Asian. The Asian kids hang together, Korean clique and Japanese clique, and won't let a regular ol' white boy join their study groups.

If he's going to continue along that career path he'll be meeting a
lot more asians along the way. They're smart and highly motivated at
home. I'd suggest that he try to make friends with some of those kids
and hopefully gain a measure of acceptance.

He gets along with them, but when he asks about studying together they brush him off
with, 'Oh, we don't study as a group after school.' It's a very competitive school. I
saw the same thing when teaching eighth grade. The Asian kids stick together, by
country, especially the Koreans. They're great kids, study their asses off, and their
parents play a big role in their education. The big question is like, "Why is Jeong
getting only a B+ in Algebra this quarter?"
