I found it on a Facebook trader/classified page. Another guy was cleaning out his shed. I could have had a 60 Merc. For the same amount but didn't know if the lower would interchange so I went with the big un.
both had burnt Pistons. Not worth a rebuild. The guys dad had them passed away, he wanted them out. His dad ran gasohol in them. Oils don't mix well with that stuff.

I'm not really an expert on those old Mercs but I remember a few
things from when Wayne (Clams) Canino was here. I believe he once
said that a leading cause of burned pistons was if one of the carbs
got leaned out compared to the others. He had a business rebuilding
and reselling them.

Sure thing Wayne. That's what my mechanic told me too. That's why I had them checked out. No, the guy I got the engine from said his dad loaded it with E-85 and did it in. Then he got a 60 and it did ok for a couple years and accidentally did it again. That took care of that. He was tired of it by then and scrapped the boat to use the trailer for hauling firewood and yard chores. (Smart man!)
After the gentleman passed away this summer, his son decided it was time to clean the place out. So I got a cheap parts unit.
If mine blows it'll probable get the same treatment. Lol
Wow...I remember Çlams. Haven't come across his name on the two or three
boating related discussion boards I read. I hope he's still above the
ground.
