I like real books also, but the iPad is really nice when traveling. As to
the Kindle. I gave my wife a Kindle Fire some years ago. Is nice as a
reader, but for web and mail, sucks. Finally gave her an iPad Mini.
Better al around. Was on close out at Walmart in Medford, near Roseburg,
so not even a bad price. The grandkids love the Kindle for games. They
are 5 and 7, so non violent games.

All I'd use the Fire for would be reading books. Although, now that you mentioned it,
the price of the iPad Mini is pretty decent. Might have to look into that. Do you
have to contract with a carrier, as with a smartphone?

You can buy a wifi only mini or a mini with wifi and cellular for about
$100 more. You do not have to activate the cellular, however, and if you
go that route, if you ever want to sell or trade in the device, you'll
recover the $$$ you paid for having cellular capability. That was my
experience when I sold my ipad.
