Interesting question. If Harry *had* been drafted and sent to
Vietnam as so many others were, would he now consider himself a killer
of babies, women and noncombatants that pillaged Vietnam villages as he
likes to accuse others of having done?
My guess is that Harry would have strived to be the top recruit in
boot camp and he would end up leading a fire team into the villages to
kill the enemy, who ever they were.
At the end of the day he is still a guv'ment man.
I'm sure I would have gotten through boot camp successfully, but even
back in those days, I had serious misgivings about the moronic war
against the Vietnamese. I would have had a difficult time going into
villages to kill people, especially people not positively identified as
being members of the military or the non-uniformed military. Was I
supposed to trust "military" intelligence?
With your luck, you might have been able to be keeping the godless
communists out of West Germany or just been painting white rocks
outside the officer's club at Ft Dix.
None of my friends had your luck. 6 of them went to Vietnam or
Thailand (air force) and one got Germany.
He ended up getting hooked on golf so pick your poison ;-)
The only one who didn't enlist or get drafted married my sister and
her 4 kids. Poor guy
